6 minute read · General information, not medical or legal advice.

Throughout the home

  • Remove loose rugs, cords and clutter from walkways.
  • Use bright lighting, and put night lights between the bedroom and bathroom.
  • Keep everyday items within easy reach, without using a step stool.

Bathroom

  • Install grab bars beside the toilet and in the shower or tub.
  • Use non-slip mats inside and outside the shower.
  • Consider a shower chair and a raised toilet seat.

Stairs and entries

  • Make sure there are sturdy handrails on both sides.
  • Light every step, with switches at the top and bottom.
  • Mark step edges with contrasting tape if they are hard to see.

Health habits

  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review medications that cause dizziness or drowsiness.
  • Have your vision checked every year.
  • Build strength and balance. A physical therapist can create a safe exercise plan at home.
